The primary role of facility managers is to manage/oversee an operating facility. To do this, facility managers must have a working knowledge of building systems, structure, interiors and exteriors and grounds so the facility and all of its required systems function efficiently, reliably, safely, securely and in a manner consistent with existing regulations and standards. Effective operation and maintenance of facilities is a complex responsibility in today's environment.

Who should become an FMP?

FMA’s Facility Management Professional (FMP) designation is a knowledge-based credential that will help to accelerate an FM's transition into the profession and demonstrate a proven comprehension of the foundations of facility management. It is ideal for:

  • Facility management practitioners looking to increase their depth-of-knowledge in the foundational FM topics deemed critical by employers.

  • Individuals who are transitioning into the FM profession.

  • Related-industry practitioners such as architects, designers and safety engineers.

  • Facility-related product and service providers.

  • Students entering the profession from colleges, universities, certificate or technical programs.

  • LEED professionals seeking continuing education hours.

How do I achieve my FMP credential?

  1. Enroll in all four courses.

  2. Participate in your classes.

  3. Read the study materials and ask questions.

  4. Complete all four exams with passing scores.

  5. Submit your FMP application (with application fee) to IFMA to validate your FMP credential.

Who is teaching?

Donna Lewis, Property/Facilities Management & Building Operations

Donna has been in Facilities and Property management for a number of years. She is an innovative, resourceful, diligent, results-driven professional with expertise in commercial and public facilities and property management. Focused skill set includes construction and project management, space planning and all aspects of leasing and lease negotiations. Well-honed influential, interpersonal, communication, strong customer service, negotiation and consultative skills. Experienced in the corporate and private sectors, unionized and government regulated environments. She is currently with the CBE where she is managing a portfolio of 37 public schools. Area project build of 3 new schools, on-going upgrades and modernizations of existing schools; buildings ranging from 100 years old to newly built. Demonstrated experience in facilities, building management systems, maintenance and operations. Solid understanding of building codes, HVAC, electrical and life safety systems. Vendor selection, Service Level Agreements and contracts.

Recently served on the IFMA Board of Directors, Calgary Chapter; Education Director. Key accomplishments included; broadening community awareness of the IFMA organization, fund development and sourcing new educational partnerships. Also served as a Director on the board of the Calgary Women's Emergency Shelter for 10 years.

What is the schedule?

The courses run 8:30 - 4:30 on Thursday, November 15, 2018, and Friday, November 16, 2018. There will be a break for a provided lunch each day. 

On Thursday, November 15, 2018, you are also invited to participate in the IFMA Winter Social for free! This is a great opportunity for you to reach out and introduce yourself to other FMs. Participation is optional, but an incredible opportunity!

  • Instruction on the materials required to pass the Maintenance & Operations FMP exam.

  • The course materials for the Maintenance & Operations course for you to keep.

  • Lunch on Thursday and Friday.

  • Coffee, water, and tea are provided throughout the day.

  • A complimentary registration to the IFMA Winter Social event, being held on Thursday, November 15, 2018, from 5:00 pm - 8:30 pm. More details as they are decided upon.
